The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is an international program of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) that is designed to increase breastfeeding rates globally. It recognizes hospitals and birth centers that provide an optimal environment for the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding by implementing and following BFHI's "Ten Steps" quality process. For more information, visit the BFHI website at www.babyfriendlyusa.org.
The BFHI assists in giving mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue to breastfeed for at least six months. This practice coincides with the American Academy of Pediatrics' policy statement announcing that exclusive breastfeeding is the ideal nutrition for approximately the first six months of a baby's life.
