St. Joseph Hospital and CSNE Perform First Dual-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker Implantation

News & Events

NASHUA, N.H. (August 2026) — St. Joseph Hospital and Cardiovascular Specialists of New England (CSNE) have achieved another milestone in advancing cardiovascular care, successfully performing their first implantation of the Abbott AVEIR™ DR Dual Chamber Leadless Pacemaker System.

The procedure was performed collaboratively by St. Joseph Hospital’s Cath Lab team and David Chang, MD, FACC, FHRS, of Cardiovascular Specialists of New England, further strengthening the partnership between the two organizations and their shared commitment to bringing innovative cardiac care to Southern New Hampshire.

The AVEIR™ DR system is the world’s first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker technology. Unlike traditional pacemakers, which require leads (wires) and a surgically created pocket under the skin, the AVEIR DR system uses two miniaturized devices implanted directly into the heart, one in the right atrium and one in the right ventricle, that communicate wirelessly with one another. The minimally invasive, catheter-based approach eliminates the need for pacing leads while maintaining synchronized communication between the chambers of the heart.

“This milestone reflects the continued innovation made possible through the partnership between St. Joseph Hospital and Cardiovascular Specialists of New England,” said Kirk Perry, St. Joseph Hospital, Director, Cardiovascular Services & Diagnostic Imaging. “By bringing dual-chamber leadless pacing technology to Nashua, we are expanding access to some of the most advanced heart rhythm treatments available today, ensuring our patients can receive exceptional care close to home.”

For patients who require pacing therapy, the dual-chamber leadless system offers an important new treatment option. By eliminating traditional leads and the surgical pocket required for conventional pacemakers, the technology may reduce the risk of lead-related complications and infections while improving patient comfort and recovery.

“The AVEIR DR system represents a significant advancement in the treatment of patients with heart rhythm disorders who need dual-chamber pacing,” said Dr. Chang. “The ability for two leadless devices to communicate wirelessly inside the heart is a remarkable innovation. We are proud to offer this technology locally and provide our patients with a minimally invasive option that can deliver excellent clinical outcomes while avoiding many of the challenges associated with traditional pacemaker systems.”

Leadless pacing technology continues to transform cardiac rhythm management, providing physicians with new tools to personalize care while improving the patient experience. This latest achievement underscores the shared dedication of St. Joseph Hospital and CSNE to clinical excellence and ongoing investment in innovative treatments that enhance patient outcomes.
