Fall Prevention

Fall Prevention

Falls are a leading cause of injury, especially in older adults, and can have serious consequences on mobility and independence. Even healthy and active people can fall.  One in four older adults fall every year in the U.S.  Taking steps to prevent a fall can help you remain independent for as long as possible.  We are committed to helping you improve your balance, strength, and coordination to reduce your risk of falling.  With the right exercises, lifestyle changes, and awareness, you can significantly reduce your risk.

A fall can change everything. Prevention can too.

Common Fall Risk Factors

Several factors increase the risk of falling, including:

  • Weak Muscles & Poor Balance: As we age, muscles weaken and balance can decline.
  • Vision Problems: Impaired vision makes it harder to navigate safely.
  • Medications: Some medications can cause dizziness or affect coordination.
  • Environmental Hazards: Cluttered walkways, uneven floors, or poor lighting can increase risk.
How We Can Help

At St. Joseph Hospital, we specialize in designing personalized physical therapy programs that focus on:

  1. Strengthening Exercises: Improve your muscle strength, particularly in the legs and core, to support better stability.
  2. Balance Training: Perform exercises that enhance your ability to maintain your balance, especially in dynamic situations.
  3. Posture Correction: Learn proper posture and body mechanics to prevent strain and promote better alignment.
  4. Fall Prevention Education: Receive tips on creating a safe environment at home and strategies to manage risk.
If you’re concerned about your fall risk, it’s never too early to take action. Schedule an evaluation with our experienced physical therapists to develop a plan tailored to your needs. Together, we can work towards better balance, strength, and safety.
