Electroencephalogram

About

An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to help diagnose problems related to electrical activity of the brain. Episodes such as seizures, fainting, or blacking out could indicate the utilization of this test. EEG testing provides vital information about the brain and its electrical activity by distinguishing seizures from other causes of loss or altercation of consciousness. We proudly perform routine and sleep deprived EEGs for patients of 18 years of age or older. All EEGs are reviewed by board-certified neurologists.

Routine EEG

We recommend arriving for a routine EEG appointment with clean, dry hair. The appointment usually lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours and will involve the attachment of sensors to patients with water-soluble paste, gauze, and tape. The electrodes do not pierce the skin.

Sleep Deprived EEG

The night before the appointment, we recommend going to bed at midnight and waking up between 4am and 5am. We ask that patients do not consume any caffeine prior to their appointment, but we do encourage breakfast.

Limiting the sleep that a patient gets prior to testing is important, as we need to ensure that sleep is achieved during the actual recording of the EEG. This appointment usually lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours, but could take longer depending if sleep is achieved. During the appointment, sensors will be applied with water-soluble paste, gauze, and tape. The electrodes do not pierce the skin.
