St. Joseph Hospital Project SEARCH is a school-to-work program that provides employment and education opportunities to individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities. By offering total workplace immersion, Project SEARCH facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration and on-the job training and support.

About Project SEARCH

Project SEARCH provides real-life work experience combined with training in employability and independent living skills. The goal for each student is competitive employment within the community, thanks to the skills they acquire during Project SEARCH.

The program was established to open doors to individuals who may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn the skills needed to be actively employed. Equally as important is the program's ability to evoke change in company culture by diversifying the employment pool.

A day in the life of a student

Students begin the program with orientation to learn about hospital protocol, corporate culture and the facility. In the weeks to follow, students will then explore internship opportunities and interview with the department head he/she is interested in interning for.

Intern rotations allow students to learn more about a particular job while working on communication and problem solving skills. Student internships are unpaid, but give students the opportunity to receive the training and skills necessary to become gainfully employed upon program completion. (Students are not necessarily guaranteed a position within St. Joseph Hospital.)

A classroom within the hospital has been designated specifically for St. Joseph Hospital Project SEARCH including group and individual workspaces. Students begin each day as a group, meeting for one-hour in the classroom, followed by internship rotations. Before the day ends, students regroup with the teacher to review homework and other important items.

St. Joseph Hospital Project SEARCH is a community effort and involves the following organizations: LinkAbilities, Nashua School District, PLUS Company, Gateways Community Services, NH Vocational Rehabilitation, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic and Home, Health & Hospice Care.
