In September, the Grey Nuns Thrift Shop, a beloved extension of St. Joseph Hospital, hosted its very first fashion show at the Nashua Country Club. The runway event was attended by over 80 people, who were as excited to see the trendy and classic fashion as they were to support the multiple models – all of whom where St. Joseph Hospital employees, St. Joseph School of Nursing students, thrift shop volunteers and even thrift shoppers.
Each attendee purchased a $25 ticket to attend the show, which included lunch. Models sported casual wear, evening wear, outerwear and accessories including shoes, jewelry and handbags. All items as well as Grey Nuns Thrift Shop t-shirts and hoodie sweatshirts were available for purchase.
Michele Canto, Director of Community Ministries, St. Joseph Hospital, says, “The fashion show was a hit! We exceeded our attendance goal and made great strides raising awareness for the shop and the significant impact it has on the lives of community members in need.”
The Grey Nuns Thrift Shop was originally opened by the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, or Grey Nuns, decades ago to help provide affordable household goods, gently used clothing, seasonal items and more to the less fortunate in the area.
“The shop supports the Nashua community with our voucher system. For example, a mom working with one of our community resource partners is given a thrift shop voucher for specific items — pants, sweatshirts, coats or sneakers,” shares Canto. “The family is then welcomed into the shop to look through its inventory and choose the voucher items they would like. Thanks to our loyal donators and supportive customers, this system has worked very well.”
The Grey Nuns Thrift Shop can be reached at (603) 883-2850 and is located at 11 Main Street in Nashua, New Hampshire. It is open Monday and Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 3pm. You may also follow the shop on Facebook.
