Charlie Tobin, R. EEG/EP T, started his medical career while serving as Medic/ Surgical Tech in the US Army during the Vietnam War era. Charlie joined St. Joseph Hospital in 2007 in the Sleep Lab as a Neurodiagnostic EEG Technologist. He collaborated with Dr. Rahman to expand the department, enhancing the range of neurodiagnostic testing available for patients. Today, Charlie works part-time as a Neurodiagnostic, EEG Technologist, and contributes to training and education within the sleep lab department.
Charlie’s favorite aspect of his job is that allows him to interact with a diverse group of people, including patients, families, nursing staff, doctors, purchasing, and administration. He appreciates the opportunity to communicate across various disciplines and engage with different departments within the hospital. Whether he is on the floors or in the office, he consistently works with patients to identify the issues they come in with and guide them towards the appropriate treatment with their healthcare team.
Heidi Fleig, Neurodiagnostic and Sleep Manager says “Charlie is the king of EEG. Charlie is unmatched in his technical excellence, knowledge base, dedication, flexibility, and enrichment of the SJH neurodiagnostic program. The current neurodiagnostic program at SJH is a direct result of Charlie’s 45+ years of service in the field and his giving nature. Charlie has elevated the program in the form of training, direct patient care, support of colleagues, and lending his knowledge to develop the policies and procedures for neurodiagnostic testing that we use today.” Also, “Charlie regularly goes above and beyond in service to SJH and the patients in our community. Charlie’s selfless dedication to his field, our organization, and the greater Nashua community at large was instrumental in reviving the neurodiagnostic program at St Joseph Hospital. Despite working full-time at another hospital, Charlie would come to SJH after hours, multiple days a week, to provide EEG, VNG, and EP testing for patients in need because we had long periods of time with no access to any neurodiagnostic techs. Without Charlie’s flexibility and commitment to our patients, these services would not have been available and may have required transfers to another facility or could have negatively impacted patient outcomes.”
One of Charlie’s most notable experiences is being a member of “Team Teal”. He shared that Heidi is an outstanding leader who has cultivated an impressive team culture in their department. The team has a high level of enthusiasm, they are eager to learn the proper techniques for assessing their patients. This aspect of his job brings him the greatest satisfaction.
When Charlie is not at work, he enjoys a semi-retired lifestyle and has developed a passion for travel. Recently, he visited Italy, exploring cities such as Rome, Venice, Florence, and Tuscany, as well as the Vatican. Together with his wife, they are ticking off destinations from their travel bucket list around the globe. Among all the places he has visited, Ireland holds a special place in his heart, as he lived there for 12 years and frequently returns to visit family who still reside there. Charlie is happily married to Jeanne and is the proud father of three children, two daughters, and a son as well as two grandchildren, all of whom live nearby, allowing him to spend time with them regularly.
Congratulations, Charlie!
