At St. Joseph Hospital Midwifery, we bring women’s healthcare “full circle,” providing care for women throughout their reproductive years and beyond. From first exams for adolescents to post-menopausal counseling, our certified nurse midwives offer sensitive care that combines clinical expertise with an understanding of a woman’s physical and emotional needs.
Midwives are experts in women’s healthcare. The term midwife means “with the woman” and that’s exactly where you’ll find us ~ with you whenever you need us.
A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is an advanced registered nurse practitioner who holds a master’s of science degree or doctorate degree and is board-certified to practice midwifery by the American Midwifery Certification Board. In the state of New Hampshire, CNM’s are licensed by the Board of Nursing as advanced practice registered nurses and can make diagnoses, prescribe medication, and provide treatment. At St. Joseph Hospital, we feel that midwifery is both a science and an art. Our midwives are experienced at blending traditional medical and pharmaceutical treatments with complementary treatments to meet your unique needs.

St. Joseph Hospital Midwifery integrates the latest technology with a natural approach to childbirth and delivery. We take the time to listen to you, welcome your questions and encourage you, with family and friends, to have the safe and healthy pregnancy and experience you desire.
During pregnancy, we monitor the health of both mother and baby as we help you plan for the birth experience. We also can treat any common health problems and handle referrals for further prenatal testing if needed. We respect your choices for childbirth, including natural births, alternative therapies or epidural anesthesia, and, of course, a physician is available during labor and delivery.
St. Joseph Hospital midwives attend births 24 hours a day, seven days a week at St. Joseph Hospital. We also collaborate closely with St. Joseph Hospital OB/GYN physicians for patients requiring consultations or services.
You will appreciate the personalized care and support you’ll receive in our woman centered environment. We offer routine exams and can assist with gynecological health concerns such as menstrual problems, infections and pre-conception counseling. We also can ease the transition through menopause using conventional and natural remedies.
“I cannot express my gratitude enough for the Midwives at St. Joseph Hospital. I just delivered my 2nd child with Theresa Small last month and my experience could not have been better. Each appointment I had, I was being spoken to and heard. If I had any questions, they were explained to me in detail that I understood. They weren’t hidden behind a computer screen. They sat down and had a real conversation with me. During the last month of my pregnancy, my father-in-law became very ill, and I was so nervous that my partner would not have been able to make it to the birth. Theresa had given me her personal phone number and offered to be my support person in case he did not make it. Luckily, he made it and she was actually the one to deliver my baby. The Midwives are all so genuine. With my first child, my delivery was difficult and the recovery was hard. This second time around with Theresa as my Midwife, and with the labor and delivery team, it seemed like a breeze! I could go on and on about how great this experience has been for me. I promise – you will not be disappointed in the care you will receive from this great group of ladies!” – Adrianna
Our team of Certified Nurse Midwives look forward to caring for you and your newborn throughout this exciting time in life.
